What the terms describe
PVC and PU refer to polymer systems used in coated materials. A finished synthetic leather can include coating layers, surface finishes, additives and a textile backing. Some published constructions contain both PVC and PU, so the individual composition should always be checked.
Why appearance is not enough
Two surfaces can look similar while using different backing, thickness, finish and production construction. Grain, gloss and colour help with design selection, but they do not reveal the complete technical profile.
Select by end use, not by abbreviation
Start with upholstery handling, environment, cleaning, expected use and required tests. Furniture, bags, automotive trim and marine seating can place very different demands on a coated fabric.
Compare like with like
When comparing products, use current technical data for the exact collection. Review composition, backing, width, weight, thickness and applicable test values under the same method and conditions.
Avoid unsupported material claims
Do not infer durability, sustainability, cleanability or regulatory compliance from the words PVC or PU alone. Those claims require product-specific evidence and a clearly defined test or assessment.
